towing with f10/11 520d ?

Postby 523ise » Tue, 08 Jan 2013 23:40:17 UTC

Does anybody tow using a 520d without the upgraded fan or has anybody heard of any issues with towing with a 520d f10 or f11 without upgrading the 400w fan? is it necessary in the uk thanks.

Seem to recall the same was said about towing with the E60/61 models as well.

Never heard of anyone having issues, I certainly haven`t in two and a half years towing a caravan and a twin-axle tilt trailer (not at the same time!).

I wouldn't personally run one without the upgrade.

If you think about it, it's not just for hot climates, it will also be required for towing up steep gradients where the engine will be working hard, progress will be slow and there will be a lack of airflow to the rad.

On top of that, the 520d engine is hardly the last word in power / torque so it will be working a lot harder than a more powerful model. Those things combined would make me fit the fan to avoid any potential overheating concerns. I would also suggest that if your engine did overheat and result in a warranty claim, BMW might be less than sympathetic if you didn't have the correct parts fitted.

It was discussed at lot for the E60 on the 520d model, non of the others required it..

Not sure if its the same on the BMW's, but on the Audi's, an up rated alternator was also required.

Another thing to think about... are you towing near the cars laden limits ? I would of thought if you was never running the car at its max laden weight, plus the caravan at its limit you would never have an issue, but thats just an opinion.

Another thought... is this a lease car or private owned ?

I think on the E60, the fan upgrade was around £100 for the parts only, plus fitting, If its a lease car would it be wrong to run it and see how it goes, :-) if you find the standard fan is on a lot after driving or runs warm (view the hidden cluster on the FX series, ((Peter is your man for this ) )

Also.. have you gone for a OEM tow bar or at least a BMW kit which enables the stability control rather than a generic device.
