E46 Coupe Harman Kardon Retrofit

Postby bowlerwell » Thu, 12 Jul 2012 20:50:00 UTC

Hi All.
I'm wondering just how much effort is involved with retrofitting the Harman Kardon system into an E46 Coupe...?

Is it just different speakers, + sub, +amp?
Are there seperate amps per speaker?
Do I need a new wiring loom?

Thanks for your help,

I think you might find the cost of all the parts, used or second hand might be more than getting a good set of speakers fitted by a specialist. should like an HK retrofit for your car also.

E46 Coupe Harman Kardon Retrofit

I wouldn't bother, much cheaper and better results from buying quality replacement speakers and amp or amps.
Done this using rainbow/bsw speakers and woofer box a massive improvement over HK system
Next job is updated Bm54 unit with improved amps and RCA outputs

Thanks for the replies. Very useful.
I like how compact and discreet the HK sub is, is there an aftermarket option that won't involve using up 1/3 of my boot space with a sub box?

Agree that the HK drowns out the straight six, but also having had a E46 without HK, I can say that the non-HK system is pants. If I had kept my vert a bit longer I would've invested in a decent stereo upgrade. I hadn't realised the benefit of the HK in my coupe until I didn't have it. :(
