BMW 1997 E39 2.8i no power between 3000-4000 revs

I'm having problems with the power of the engine in my BMW 5 Series E39 2.8. First of all it takes a couple of turns of the key to get the thing started. When I pull away there is power until the engine reaches around 3000-4000 revs then the power drops but the revs carry on rising, this happens in all the gears. I've put the car on a diagnostic machine and according to that the mass airflow sensor and crank shaft sensor were faulty. I've replaced these sensors but I'm still having the same problems! I also notice that when I'm driving slow and the car is in full steering lock the engine sometimes cuts out, I'm not sure if this is related to the engine problems. Any help would be much appreciateded!!

Hmm, MAF and crank sensor were the two things I was going to suggest. Have they been fitted correctly? Is the MAF the right one? Does the diagnostic machine still show any faults?
