My wife's E46 (year 2000 with 1900cc engine ) sometimes will not open the drivers door on the key fob-button !!
( same with 2 keys).
The courtesy lights come on, boot release clonks, but door doesn't open.
Two or three attempts cures it.
Once in a while we have to use the key in the drivers door, but the passenger door will NOT open.
Arrrrrgggggghhhhhh !!!!
This is random - sometimes it is hours since last used, sometimes only minutes.....
Can you imagine either of us clambering over the bl**dy handbrake and gear lever to get in the passenger side.
Its just a bit annoying. If a copper saw us doing it - we get nicked.

HELP. pretty please....... we're too old for this climbing over nonsense.

not really clued up on this but could it be that the key's set to only unlock the drivers door on the first click? if you don't click again quick enough the other doors won't unlock? is the door lock button working ok for opening/locking?

failing that sounds like the central locking's just plain goosed! best to get it to a dealer or even a good indy to hook up to comp and see if any codes etc are showing up.

sorry can't be more help, bet it's flipping annoying!!

HELP TOO!

The same problem happens to me! I dont understand it. I went out for a night in Leeds the other night with three other mates and guess what...

1am, in the rain trying to get into the car! The trouble is that all the doors are double locked so unable to open from the inside too!

Went to Stratsone BMW in Doncaster and they wanted £350 to fix it!! - I didnt bother at that price (just put up with it!)

The weird thing is, after the service I had no bother for about 6 months upto two weeks ago!

mat h i presume that stratstone then knew what the problem was, did they enlighten you with that info?

find a decent indy and they'll probably fix for half that.

does the problem also affect the boot then?? does the door unlock/lock button on the dash not work either??

Hi Monkeyboy,
They told me (after taking £35 for the privilege), that it was some central control unit that needed replacing - im sure!

What is an 'indy'?

The problem doesnt really afect the boot, as this has a separate sorta solinoid lock.

Ps, I now have problems with locking the car, as oposed to opening it.

Its so annoying!!! LOL

hi mat, and 'indy' is just another term for an independent, not a franchise bmw dealer, but you could find a good local independent bmw specialist close to you who'd be more than capable of the work (and know the cars probably just as well as a dealer) they'd sort it and prob for a good bit less.

only reason i asked if the boot was working was obviously as it all works off the same key! when you unlock the doors it unlocks the boot. is it perhaps an issue wi the key? have you tried your spare?

i'm really clutching at straws here for ya m8 as i aint all that technically minded lol

My 330 vert had the same problem, it was under AUC warranty so was fixed for free, but they said they had to change the actuator/motor in the drivers door to fix it. Not sure if they replaced anything else. Since they did it though its been perfect.

I've had the same problem for a few years on my 1999 323se, it appears worse in cold weather but thankfully it's worked for the last couple of months.

Once it stops working it stays like that for a while then goes back to normal again.

Yes ! My wife sometimes has to climb over the drivers seat because her door will not open too !!

Hi, I am having exactly the same problem - sometimes the keyfob works fine but then suddenly it will no longer open the doors whatsoever. I have to try it several times then eventually it will open the doors.
It happens on both keyfobs aswell.

THE FAULT -

Its called the `General Module` box and it can be found behind your glovebox. This box controls the switching of the doors and windows. Its a faulty relay inside the module causing all the problems.

To see what the box looks like look here -

http://data.bmrparts.com/bmwparts/23287604174185U.html

A new module is over £200

I am currently trying to fix my module box, dont fancy paying £200+

There are two Siemens v23084 relays soldered onto the circuit board which are at fault. Once i manage to get hold of 2 replacements I can then solder them into place and hopefully problem sorted !!

relay description -

I will keep you informed

I had exactly the same last year, local indie wouldnt touch it cause it being a security thing, said BMW only. Took to dealers to look at, phoned me back to tell me the general modual needed to be replaced, once replaced it requires programing to your car, cost........£400!!!!!!!
