I bought my 528i sport in June 04 when it was 4.5 years old, and since the purchase was a private sale I decided to get a warranry. I went with Warranty Wise Premium cover, about £300.00 including home start and full recovery by AXA (axa own Warranty wise). At the last oil service just before Christmas they told me my Steering Rack was leaking and would need to be changed - you could see fluid leaking from both sides. Checked the book and found to my relief I was covered. With Xmas in the way nothing really happened, but today I found out that the claim has been accepted and they have given the garage (J&D motors, BMW specialist in High Wycombe), the go ahead. The bill comes to £1800.00 + vat for the rack from BMW(they have authorised a brand new one and not a reconditioned one) plus about £500.00 labour (£1000.00 if a main dealer did it). So with the recent increase in BMW prices warranty, if anyone is thinking of 3rd party, I fully endorse Warranty Wise. The whole claim has been so easy. One phone call from the garage to check the proceedure, and another to give them the prices. They then called back with the go ahead and a claim number.
Website here Warranty wise
All I have to pay for is some oil (classed as a consumable), about £12.00, so a major result I think

that sounds brilliant! I bet you're might relieved to have it all go through well.
I suppose we could all do with some more good-news stories of 3rd party warranties, all the more reason not to automatically go to BMW.
shame about the 'consumable' oil you''ll have to fork out for |

result i fancy. out of interest, what are the service requirements in order to keep the warraty valid??? Only reason for asking is the 'we are the only dealer that give 2 years free warranty on all our cars' dealer stipulated a full oil and filter change every 6 months and full service every 12. Even at independant garages this runs into a tidy sum and as for the stealers, well....
The small print also revealed a maximum payout of 1000 quid on any one claim so i took a decision not to bother as it seemed more hassle than it was worth. Had the car just over a year now and touch wood no problems(hope this isn't the kiss of death!)

stevieh, that's a very good result. I'm having problems with Warranty Direct to authorise a replacement turbo. Although my policy covers repairs by franchised dealers, WD would rather I used one of their network garages to save costs. Does J&D specialise in both petrol and diesel? I'd appreciate their contact number.

Great news Steve mate - I have been meaning to email you and find out how things were going.
I have been looking as the various aftermarket warranty options as you know so it'll be good to compare them with the info found at www.racwarranty.com
Thanks and well done mate. |

Hi guys
The service requirements are that it must be serviced within the manufacturers guidelines, by any VAT registered garage. My policy has a claim limit of £6000.00 per valid claim, up to the purchase price of teh car per year. You can even pay extra to cover main dealer labour rates, MOT cover, etc.
J&D are two master technicians from Hughenden BMW, who bacame disillusioned with the service levels at the dealer and set up on their own, just north of High Wycombe.
number is 01494 564494, ask for John.
they are mentioned on the good garage guide on the unixnerds website

click on the Good garage guide on teh left hand side, then London and South East.

Stevih,
very interesting. As some of you know, I dipped out of getting a renewed cheaper warranty from BMW by 11 days and will seriously look at a third party.
My general approach will be to look for a provider that will give the best all round cover but stay at or below the price that BMW would have charged me for a renewal under the old scheme.
Looks like warranty Wise come in well under budget |

Zarnd, I went for premium cover as there are certain stipulations regarding age and mileage for the total cover.

Steve did you go for the "optional" extra (from what I read on the site) for air-con cover? If so how much did it add?
Also, anyone used Birds (Middx.) for general service work out of interest? |

Anyone had dealings with either of them? |

Simon, on the premium cover this is included for the 5 series, also includes turbo if you have one. As I said this was the one I was going to choose if I got the 530d. As far as Birds are concerned I havent dealt with them myself, but I remember Peppernick saying he had used them.

hop
There is a scale depending on year/mileage/car. the older the car/higher mileage the less things they will cover for you.

| Thanks stevieh, I haven't looked at their site yet, but does it say on their site what is covered depending on car model/year/mileage. Interesting to know and see if/what will be covered on my 1996 with 80k on the clock. |

Cheers Steve - I had a quote for 12 months arrive in the post yesterday - very reasonable £277.50 - although I would like to add the main dealer rate possibly and maybe MOT insurance - I have emailed them to see what the "extra" would work out at. They listed the turbo as covered as you rightly say.
I'll send Nick a PM on the service subject. Thanks again. |
