Hi folks

This time last year I recall going on to a price comparison website and getting what was then a pretty decent quote for my car, it was about £800ish iirc for three named drivers. Renewal time is here and the letter came through the post from current insurer. The renewal price is a whopping great £1700ish - what a crazy jump!!!

Anyhooo, I attempted a quick update of the quote using one of the price comparison websites again, and the cheapest it claimed to find this time was about £1110 which is still well above what we paid this time last year, considering nothing else has changed, same car, same named drivers etc etc.

Have u guys experienced similar when renewing?

I think I need to get onto another comparison website and run a totally NEW quote through rather the renew an expired quote of last year to see if it makes a difference.

Not found that , and just renewed my insurance. Was originally with Admiral who wanted £307 up front or £390 if paying monthly.
Went with Churchill in the end with monthly payments and only £267. Used Go Compare site for quotes.
That is on an X3.

On the BMW, A Plan came out with the best price again and the premium only went up £30 but on my Golf Admiral have decided to add another £250 onto my premium.

Funnily enough, my renewal has come through just recently, and it's only gone up £25 (£399 to £424), which is a surprise as usually I find the automatic renewal notices tend to include a sizeable increase. Also our policy was bought last year on one of those 'introductory discount' things.

I'll still be looking around for cheaper deals though - it seems the only way to get a decent deal is to change companies every year.

Yes certainly seems to be the way although u would think they want to retain u so offer u a good price for continuity esp if u have never claimed!

I just gave GoCompare a whirl, and pleasantly surprised to see that it quotes me many quotes around the £600 - £700 mark...shame on MoneySupermarket comparisons, they were much much higher. Strange but something must have caused that I suppose. I'll have to compare the details entered into it to spot any differences. Still cant see what could account for near 500 extra on the cheapest quote!

Trouble with Direct Line, Church Hill and Privilege is they are all cutting prices to retain market share regardless of whether they can afford to or not.
They are all basically forcing the others to keep cutting prices.
The irony is all of the above (plus a number of others) are part of the mostly tax payer owned RBS.
Another financial disaster waiting to happen liability resting with the tax payer.
Oh wait, the nearly complete list of RBS insurance comapnies needs to be seen

Admiral - they own confused.com

If the stock market is low it impacts on underwriting capacity which means the only place the underwriter can gather enough funds to cover their liabilities is with higher premiums.

Would explain why they are usually keen on price on there .A few people have said they cant get anywhere near last years quotes at work so does seem to be true for some anyway.

Hi

Swift wanted £320 this year (£240 last year, £225 the year before) that's a big jump for the same insurance for my 320d.

Queried it and got a load of waffle about increasing costs etc - asked them how much they thought my income had increased in the past year they had no idea so I told them - NOTHING! Offered them £260 - "Oh no sir, we don't price match or accept offers".

Got a quote and insured with Aviva for £265. They're worth a try as they don't subscribe to comparison websites so go direct.

Best regards
Tony.

FWIW after renewing via a broker for 15 years at accepting their word on 'best value', I finally balked a a 600 + renew quote with Axa as I wanted to add a driver which would have put it up even more. Via Compare the Meercat (much less less confusing that confused.com ) I went with Liverpool and Victoria for 360 inc the extra driver. It is very basic insurance with no courtesy car etc but that is OK with me. As a plus, L&V were rated in 4th place in the Autocar Insurance survey last winter. I did try to get a quote from the company that they rate highest, NFU Mutual but they took one look at my postcode and laughed.

I would agree that insurance has gone up this year.

I got a renewal qoute with Elephant through the door, and it was surprisingly the cheapest quote I'd got. But I rang them up anyway and asked if they could do it any cheaper and they knocked 50 quid off!

Loyalty can pay in certain circumstances. I have my cars insured with 'More Than' who give me a gaurantee of no-claims protection for life with the additonal promise that they will never increase my premiums due to any number of accidents in the future. They do not offer that additional promise any more other than long standing existing customers. If I leave More Than, I will not get that cover again. Insurers might give you no claims protection percentage but only after they have increased your gross premium after you have made claims.

My Premium is £339, which is probably not the cheapest but their level of service is excellent and they have always treated me extremely fairly on claims. They have just given me a brand new C class Mercedes as a coutesy car while they fix my 3 series.

You get what you pay for.

Update, if it helps anyone else, I got a good deal with AXA through moneysupermarket.com and it included a 30 quid online discount too which only moneysupermarket offer for AXA, none of the othercomparison websites matched it despite giving AXA quotes too . It was by far the cheapest quote for my car and the named drivers I added, just about 625 after adding a few extras I wanted

Esure told me that my hike in insurance this year was due to an explosion in personal injury claims.

They all make excuses every year about why its more (crocodile tears methinks ),The real reason is they know a good percentage will stay as they are too lazy to do anything about it , shop around theres cheaper out there . Wink

I think after 2 years with a company they refuse to price match anymore to call yout bluff Rolling Eyes
