Hi,

Has anyone had any problems with their central locking?

I have a 2003 320td- symptom is intermittent - it always locks ok and sometimes works fine but sometimes cancels the alarm (thankfully) but the doors don't open - drivers door opens ok with the key but passenger door doesn’t.

Obviously not a show stopper but there is a subtle problem that someone may also have experienced.

Just asking before putting it into the dealer for the madatory grand of work required.

cheers
Guy

Hi,

YEs! I have the very same problem, there is a thread on here to confirm the problem.

I also have a 53 plate 320d, the fault is very intermittent, (but a complete pain in the banned word when a passenger wants to get in and it;s summer in Britain!)

The car never fails to lock, the car never fails to unlock the boot, (I have a tourer) but sometimes, doesnt unlock the doors.

Completely hit and miss,

My specialist in Cardiff has confirmed that I need a new central control unit, which is circa £300. The thread also confirms this,

hope this helps?

Hi,
I have a 2003 318i Touring aswell with exactly the same problem - just wanted to add here to give weight to this issue. Can you tell me did a new control unit fix the problem? I've seen various articles when googling for this about getting new keys with fresh batteries in or changing fuses and disconnecting batteries etc. The control unit seems most likely - I'll go look for the thread you mention now. I don't think it's a key/fob battery issue - since when it goes, it happens with the wife's key and mine, makes no odds which we use and I can hear something clicking inside the car when I try and unlock with the key.
Funny, it seems to happen more often in the cold - not sure if that's just in my head or an actual fact.

Anyway I'll go look for this thread - I'll stick the link in here if/when I find it.

Cheers folks - this has to be one of the most useful and informative forums on any topic that I've been on - thanks bmwland!

Davy

Your GM5 module needs new relays. Info here:

http://www.bmwgm5.com/

I posted a message asking if anyone had got their relays replaced locally, but nobody replied yet.

Tonight i took my module out of the car, soldering looks a bit beyond my capability so i'm contacting local (cardiff) electronic repair companies to see if they can do it, if i supply the parts.

You beat me too it Mike! I just posted that in the thread I found - but all the important stuff is there on that site.

Just reading up more on it then I think I'll buy a couple and have a rattle myself.

Cheers

Mike - you can order them from that website - just search for the guy on Ebay in the US - here try this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-Relays-to-fix-Door-Lock-Probem-on-BMW-E46-GM5-Module_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c39Q3a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3911Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem260304506211QQitemZ260304506211

But read his whole site very carefully - I like the idea of getting an electronics type place to do it - I'm banned word at soldering - plus it sounds like getting the existing ones out is a nightmare without frying the whole board.

Yeah im thinking along those lines too! I've emailed him and he seems pretty helpful - suggested getting someone local to do it as its probably raining here and i'll need the wipers!

I'll contact a few local electronics firms in the morning.

Let us know how you get on..
