E34, E39, E60 are all models of 5 Series. E60 is the latest body shape. As you have a start button, it sounds like the E60.

Is the car under some sort of warranty? If so, take it back, give them the keys demand a replacment until yours is fixed . . .

When the engine is turning, but not starting, is is spinning over very fast, at normally speed or labouring?

There could be some very simple solutions, like a bad earth connection somewhere, or a problem with your starter motor.

It could also be a problem with your fuel pump or injectors - I'm no oilburner head so I don't know much about diesels.

Surely an approved BMW garage or main dealer can sort this out . . .

                                      Another question please......

Was there a Facelift of the e39 in 1998 ? Just something i read in another post.....

Also on a scale of 1 - 10, how reliable are these cars overall and what are the main points/milages that need attention?

Been reading on here of sus issues and auto box issues over 100k.

Thank you

Thanks for the quick reply. The reason it seems frozen is because the front brake pad indicator was 2200 mls when it went in and hadn't moved until I took it back to him, and he tried to reset front pads also. This caused the red service light to come on and dashes displayed instead of miles when reset.
Lost all drive on the way to work, managed to get 1st, was in N then R then P and was moving forward !!! Conclusion is the gearbox is cattled 2005 43,000 miles and FBMWSH - so it appears to be the end of our short relationship.
In summary ....... awesome car but extremely fragile, EGR valve, Crankshaft sensor. glow plugs, swirl flap removal, etc etc but frankly too much worrying about what will go next. Need a diesel but as VW not an option will probably head back to Ford
Just wanted to say this is a fantastic forum, and all the replies have been extremely effective

Hi, I picked up my 2007 330d a week ago and I love it,

Here's the replies I got when asking for test drive tips ...

"Just check the usual issues rft/tyres, body and interior condition."

"Take it out on the roughest most rutted roads you can find in your normal driving area and make sure your comfortable with the drive."

"Listen out for any annoying rattles inside the car,

Get to about 35mph on a dual carriageway/motorway have it in DS mode and floor it...you will love it (watch the speedo as you will v quickly get to 70!)

Oh then re set the mpg and drive at a steady 60/70 you will also like the economy."

Sounds good mate, you certainly do not need low profiles for handling... Remember the only reason GT cars have huge wheels is to fit the brakes under them

I'm liking my 17" wheels so with you on the not needing huge wheels, I've got the Eibach prokit and getting tempted to change the dampers at some point... But we'll have to see!

andyh636 wrote:

I had to ‘enthuse’ to someone, the wife does not see the significance!

LOL! Tell me about it... It's the glazed look before walking away and turning on the TV
