BMW SWIRL FLAP PROBLEM & FIX
BMW Swirl Flap failure problems were identified on BMWLand on 14th June, 2007 and various discussions have since taken part on fixes. PMW Ltd were the first to identify a long term fix for swirl flaps by creating an aluminum swirl flap blanking plate and were featured in the May 2009 edition of Total BMW magazine. BMWLand members have also visited PMW to have their swirl flap concerns addressed and due to the overwhelming positive feedback from members BMWLand is pleased to recommend members to PMW for help and advice on BMW swirl flaps. Visit the PMW Website where you will find contact details for PMW who will happily discuss any concerns you may have and advise you further. PMW have BMW, BMW Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche & Ferrari factory trained Technicians with over 80 years combined and specialise in servicing, repair, diagnostics, 4-wheel computerised alignment, tyre supply/fitting, air-conditioning and MOT testing. The Problem: The BMW inlet manifold has butterfly flaps, also known as swirl flaps, which are designed to open and close the length of the manifold to alter the torque output of the engine. Most of the time these flaps work as designed, but they can break up causing them to be sucked into the engine causing damage to pistions, valves, cylinder heads and damage to the turbo. The Answer: BMW introduced thicker swirl flap and then had jackets fitted to prevention them being sucked into the engine, however there have been reports of engine damage even with the newer style flaps. There are two fixes, regular replacement of the manifold to ensure it is covered by BMW warranty or the fitting of swirl flap blanking plates from PMW. PMW Contact: |
