E60 service light reset for microfilter

Postby phil-lfc » Tue, 29 Sep 2009 13:48:39 UTC

Having read through a few posts here, I think I'm going to change the microfilter myself.

It is showing as overdue, by about 1000 miles, so will this cause any problems when attempting the reset?

Thanks,
Phil

Hi,

Did the same myself a few weeks ago.

Noticed that the service indicator / interval on start up was counting down, so went to the service menu and found that I needed to get the microfilters changed.

Rang the $tealers and found they wanted silly money for, what was in effect a 5-10 minute job.

Filters from the $tealers were £33 + vat each, so went on the net, (after checking on here about ease of doing it myself and how to reset the interval).

Had a chat with my old mate Olli, who assured me is was a piece of cake and even directed me to a sticky on how to reset my service interval on the i drive.

Found that the recommended filters are charcoal, although cheaper ones are available but are really rubbish, so checked and founf Eurocarparts were doing them for about 24+vat for carbon ones, (which I assume are similar???). :?

Anyway, ordered 2 off the net and a couple of other things, and as my purchase was over £50, got free next day delivery thrown in. :D

They arrived the next day, but found that each box contained 2 filters anyway, so now had 4, (will change again in about 6-9 months). :P

Took me about 5 minuts to do each filter and after a bit of trial and error, (timing is important) reset the counter no problem as well.

So save yourself a few quid and do it yourself .... it is 'simples' ..... T

Yeah, ordered them from ECP too, ordered at 3pm Tues, arrived midday Wed! (£32 incl P&P)

Just about to go outside and try and fit them now. Will post my experience on here afterwards.

For anyone considering getting BMW to change the microfilter - DON'T!!!!

I am certainly no mechanic and I've just changed both filters in less than 5 minutes. It is such a simple job it is laughable that BM charge so much. I got the carbon type filters from Euro Car Parts and they are made in Germany and were a perfect fit. All I needed was a 13mm spanner to turn a plastic nut 1/4 turn and undo a large clip by hand.
I'm glad I did change them though as the old ones were a right state!

I also managed to reset the service indicator after following advice on here, thanks :) (This took a little longer than changing the filters as it took me a while to get the symbol to come up. I had to keep hold of the odometer button until the symbol came up).

Phil-LFC,

Same experience as me, took no time to swap the filters, (and mine were filled with all sorts of cr4p), but took a little longer to reset the I Drive.

Not sure if I reset it a couple of times, as the interval to my next change is showing 32,000 miles, which surely can't be right???

Anyway, as I have got 2 more filters, will probably change again in 9 - 12 months ... T

Had my microfilters replaced by my BMW indy, (Westbury IBM) £51 for parts (OEM) and £14.70 for labour (+vat).

Can't imagine what the $tealers would have charged for labour.
