E34 Differential Ratio
A few months back I had to replace the differential on my 1989 520i manual as the casing was cracked. I replaced it with one from a 525i which 2 sources told me was the same ratio.
This appears not to be the case as the ratios are completely different and makes the car difficult to drive. For example previously at 70mph in 5th it would be pulling around 3500rpm, now this is about 2500rpm.
Obviously only being a 2.0 litre 12v the engine is not powerful enough to maintain any speed without continuous downchanges through the gears.
Does anyone know what the original OEM ratio should be as the old one has been disposed of so cannot check the ratio tag. I cannot find any info about this anywhere on the net.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Mark.
