E39 Knock on front suspension

Postby sjrainsford » Sun, 05 Mar 2006 18:23:39 UTC

Hi peeps!

As the title suggests, I have a knock on the front suspension when I go over rough ground, seems to be from the passenger (kerb) side. This would make sense as this is the one that gets most of the drains etc.

Is there any suspension components that are common to fail on these? It's an E39 1998 520i.

Thanks all in advance!

Most common fault beems to be the anti roll bar drop links. Approx £50 for the pair and an easy DIY fit. Wiggle them to see if they are loose. Next on the possible list would be the ball joints on the wishbone links.

Thanks for that matey! I'll jack it up and have a look when I get time. Must admit, I was thinking roll bar drop links. They seem to go on a lot of cars.

Will have a waggle!

If all those don't come up trumps then don't rule out the suspension top mounts. Most people are not aware of this item which eventually wears out and they end up tearing their hair out after replacing almost every other suspension component be it a bush or arm or drop links. These mounts sit at the top of your strut assembly and only cost around £30.00 for a pair. Fitting should not set you back any more than £100.00 from a good Indy as they have to strip the whole strut leg.

I have had this replaced on my car after I experienced the same type on knocking.

thanks zayd55!

Have just got from underneath the car, and couldn't find anything that seemed to have play in it. However, the other wheel was still on the floor, so this will hold the anti roll bar taught on the other side. Fingers crossed it's the drop links now you've said that though!

Is there an easy way to check the top mounts?

Cheers all again!

I am afraid not, with the only way to inspect the condition of the top mounts being to dismantle the front strut setup.

I guessed you'd say that!!

Looks like i'm taking it into a garage to be looked at. Can't be bothered with all that hassle.
