My first E60 mod.

Postby Poot1873 » Sat, 16 Jan 2010 20:08:03 UTC

I did my first mod to my 525i M Sport E60 today. I've always liked the SAT (Sport Automatic Transmission) but this is not an option below a 530. I've seen retrofits on other forums and knew it was pretty easy to do. I managed to buy the parts from ebay saving a fortune.

Does it actually work? As you say a very easy retrofit and one that could now provide a lot of enjoyment for not a lot of outlay!

cheers and well done

Yes it works fine, here is the retrofit http://www.sendspace.com/file/pht6m1 its not BMW official, a forum member over at 5series.net made it up.
The mod gives faster upshifts/downshifts, stiffening of steering when the sport button is pushed. No coding is needed, its just hardware replacement, you can get a bit of coding from your dealer but this only shows the word sport in the dash when the button is pushed and when in manual mode it will show S1, S2 etc instead of M1, M2 etc, this would probably cost a couple of hundred and in my opinion not worth it.
The parts required are:
Console cover £70.37
Sat Shifter £121.58
Sport button £45.65
ECU Unit £199

I was very lucky mind you and found somebody selling all of these on ebay for £110. The look and feel of the shifter is so much better than the big standard remote control gear stick.

More info can be found in these posts, this is where I read all about doing the mod

Hi mate,

I'm from London and thought I could ask for some help.

I bought SAT RETROFIT parts from eBay.

I installed a ok but nothing seems to be happening. My car is a 530d September 2007 lci.

After everything is connected no green illumination on the SAT gear stick.

Does it need coding or do you think the SAT gear stick is faulty??

Spent £200 on the parts.

Please help if our can

Thanks

I had the same thing until it was coded, the sport button lit up and I had 'sport' appear in the cluster when the sport button is pressed only after coding. I know of a few people who have been lucky and it's worked without coding but mine didn't, mine is July 2007 so maybe this only affected early lci's

Cool. But I get no lights coming on. Even when I press the sports button. I can't change gear as it stays in P.
Where did you get your coding done and how much did it cost mate?
Your in Staines right? West London?
In in south east London.

Thanks for your help

Sounds like you have a problem then, I was able to use the shift straight away, even in DS mode, the only thing that didn't work was the sport button. A guy in dartford coded mine, I can give you the details on a pm if required. Yes I am in Staines.

Are the parts guarranteed as it sounds like an ECU problem, are you sure you've plugged everything in?

Thanks Worthy. I'm going to try and get my money back but probably won't. Might ask him to refund me some and then I can buy the ECU from the dealer. Just don't know how much it costs though. Thanks again. Might have to get eBay involved. Hate it when this happens!!

Thanks

Can't remember now, about 400 I think from Cotswold bmw where we get discount. I was lucky with the steering wheel as I bought it from Scorcher on this forum for 100 quid, are you going for the steering wheel as well?

I'd like to go for the steering wheel but its well expensive. The steering wheel is like £400 alone. Plus ill need massive help trying to get that working. My DIY skills are limited unfortunately. Need to sort this refund out first from eBay. Sigh!! Good thing we have these forums! Thanks for all your help mate.

If you paid with PayPal register a problem on the purchase with the information that it doesn't work. They will do all the work and usually it finishes in your favour.

Good luck

Ps

I used the same coder for my car he knows his stuff would recommend :D
