Map Cooling Activation - Fault Code Help

Postby ruhul707 » Sat, 01 Aug 2009 20:14:36 UTC

Hi Guys,

since my last post I have had the rear bearings replaced at a cost of £250.00 for the MOT, garage also did a diagnostics test and came back with the following code: "123 Activation, map cooling"

Garage guy thinks that it is the engine temperature sensor, but wasn't sure, he told me to get a proper diagnostics done that checks live reading and all.

Firstly has this fault code been diagnoesd correctly, or should I get another diagnostic test, and secondly looking at eurocarparts there seem to be two types of temperature sensors for my car:

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BMW_5+Series_520_2.2_2001/p/Car-Parts/Engine-Parts/Fuel-and-Engine-Management/Engine-Management-Sensors/?224110300&1&9e8a259d53047708705ad2e687320ab39f2560ec

Had a look at realoem http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT22&mospid=47538&btnr=11_2637&hg=11&fg=35, I think I need part number 4, but which of the eurocarparts item is this.

How difficult a job is to replace this, I had a look under the bonnet and there looks to have been a water leak around the sensor at some time, but water levels are fine. The sensor itself is located under the vanos unit so does that mean the vanos needs to come out in order to change the sensor?

isn't that code something to do with the thermostat?

Like machinehead already said this code is likely to be caused by faulty thermostat which has electric activation for higher temperature on partial load.
