Postby sps » Sun, 05 Apr 2009 20:54:56 UTC

the car is a 108k miler 318i-2litre.

the check engine light is on again.

so will be taking it back to the local indy specialist who is going to re-check and read the fault codes.

last time he had 3 codes-2738-catalytic converter bank 1.

2799-throttle actuator adaptation abort due to environmental conditions.

2783-hot film air mass flow.

he said the likely cause air flow meter.

he says it could be 250 quid to replace air mass sensor

I think there's a fault with e46's and the engine management light. I had it on mine also - spent around 250 trying to sort it out and still it came on. The MAF is part of an MOT check (I think) that the car passed so what was the problem?!

The first time it lit up, I noticed that the light would go away if I filled up with shell optimax. When I reverted to tesco fuel, the light would come on again. So I stuck with Shell, but that only delayed the light becoming consistently on.

Elsewhere on this forum, I've read that the Air Filter can have an effect on this sensor - not sure if this is true.

In any case, after a good MOT check I ended up just ignoring the EML and driving like there was nothing wrong. The car had done upwards of 180k miles and still pulled right up to the red line in 5th. Smoothly. I miss that car.

Mine would come after filling up or if the oil filler cap was not screwed on tightly.

check there is no rips on the air inlet hoses after the filter and more importantly the air flow sensor, if its sucking in to much air past these points it cant calculate the correct combustion.

Good luck

Yes, I too had these hoses changed and there was a slight rip in one. Sadly it only stopped the light for around 5000k miles.
