Can I replace a business tape player with a business CD?

Postby t15dja » Fri, 29 Jun 2007 11:42:55 UTC

Hi,
I have a 1998 535i E39 with radio and tape player above the radio. Is it possible to take out the tape unit and replace it with the single disk business CD unit from a later model E39? Is the wiring compatible i.e. just "plug and play".....and is this a DIY job?

Thanks in anticipation.

Yes yes and yes. I saw a guide to this, it looks pretty straightforward - wish I'd kept the link. Sorry.

Cheers

Sorry to hijack this but do you know if you can replace a Professional tape player with a business single CD player?

And to jump on the bandwagon, can one replace the professional tape deck with the Mini Disc option?

On the E39, the tape player under the flap can be swapped for a single CD or MiniDisk (MD might be year specific - I don't know). AFAIR it's a straight swap. People were put off because the cost of the single units tended to be much higher than a boot mounted multichanger.

Now then , this is interesting. This is something I would love to do, replace my tape head unit with a single slot cd player.

I rang FAB Direct to see if they had any used head units for sale, and told the chap what i wanted to do. He started chuckling at the other end of the phone, and said its an incredbily complex matching up process.

There is a such a variety apparently, that getting the right part for the right connection is incredibly difficult, and this then put me right off.

So Harry - any pointers as to where to start? I'd love to do the swap but a bit confused as to the right way forward!

I was looking at doing this when I got my E39. I found some stuff on the Web about retrofitting. It's possible that a connector/adaptor of some sort was needed but it looked very straightforward. I wish I'd kept the links. How about E39 Tips? That's usually a good source. What put me off was the cost. With a multichanger in the boot it just didn't seem worth it.

I might have a look and search later when I'm back home ( at my sisters in London at the moment ).

I've got rid of my multichanger in place of the Dension Ice Link for iPod, so I have no quick and easy way of playing cd's now, hence the interest in a single slot cd player!

Here's one with High OBC - I wonder if that makes a difference?

Had a look at that link, thanks Harry.

I've come across a used Business CD PLayer with a MID unit, which I'm thinking of getting. It has the connections at the back of the unit missing though ( connecting the back of CD unit to back of radio unit ).

Otherwise, might just go for it and try it out. It would be great if it fitted - as the MID unit would then work with my Dension Ice Link and display the iPod info ( track title / artist ).

Any one else tried doing this?
