Should my exhaust tips be so sooty ?????

Postby b21playa » Tue, 29 Oct 2013 12:01:49 UTC

Just noticed the exhaust tips caked in soot and wondered if this was right. I can not remember any of my others being like that.

DPF is still on the car, and it does regen frequently according to the status via my launch x431

As my mpg has dropped as well, just wondered if this is anything related.

Would have thought it should be like this

Give it a bit of a thrash - that should help!

Mine are as clean as a whistle so in short no they shouldn't. Mine gets two 60 mile stretches a day though to be fair, mind it still has a dpf and 126k on the clock (says he touching wood rapidly)

I have a late 2008 E61 520D (N47 Engine) still original DPF and 156K on the clock.....tailpipe internal is immaculate ...zero soot....so DPF is still working fine.
Heavy soot deposits points to the DPF having been removed..... Strange...

Similarly to other poster ....a motorway blast each day ensures regular regenerations......
As mine is a manual gearbox car....I am not aware of when regens take place other than when I park up whilst one is in operation.
Then I hear the exhaust "cool down" crackle and smell hot rubber....which I assume is the exhaust hanger rubbers getting hot.

The picture is not what you'd expect, even with frequent active regenerations. My diesel would just leave a trace of soot after an active regeneration, but nothing more.

Mine internally are clean enough to eat my dinner off.

Car gets 2 runs of 25miles everyday on the motorway.

DPF is 100% still present, as I've had one without before and exhaust note was different, a bit like a jet. I have seen it clean a month or so ago, when I could see white smoke in the rear view mirror when it was regenerating, and the tips were clean, although with what looked like a white residue (pic below).

I reckon there is something underlying wrong with it, just not sure what.

Mine were as clean as a whistle until I removed the dpf [:D] even now they are not to bad as I have an excellent remap. I think perhaps you're not getting a full regen or not reaching max burn off temp of around 620C (Guessing)

Also 25 miles each way is a little short for a proper regen process IMO especially now the outside temp is dropping from start up

Even if its not getting a full regen, I would have thought tips would be clean as all the soot is held in the dpf. I wonder is there is a test in DIS. Other option was to remove it and give it a clean as car is on 108k now

I'll have to take it for a long spirited drive in the meantime, and check coolant temp and when the last regen was

Took car for a spin and monitored it using my launch.

Backpressure was 15mbar and after was down to 4mbar

Just seen black sot on the flexi on the cat

Could this cause any of the symptoms?

Can't see it being the cause of sooty exhaust pipes, but does suggest a leak from the flexi.

If you think yours look sooty I should show you a pic of mine. :)

Even if it isnt the cause of sooty exhaust, I guess it will give incorrect back pressure readings, as pressure will be lost from flexi. Trying to find a local exhaust place who can cut the old flexi out and weld in a new one

Ah, sorry, I was thinking of sooty exhaust tips, not your other issue with the backpressure.

Just had a price of £120 to supply and fit a new flexi. What you reckon?

Decided to drop the car off to an exhaust place. Put the car on the car and clearly the flexi has split, which is why I could smell exhaust fumes in the car, especially on start-up. Have left it with them to replace @ £120.

I have just put the car up for sale, and couldnt sell it with the exhaust fumes entering the cabin and poisoning someone, so had to be done.

Only other things that need to be done are the crankcase breather and egr thermostat.

Not sure yet. Can't be another 535, I've had way too many now, and they have all been in the same colour.

Due to recent house purchase as well funds wont allow me to get what I really want, so just looking around at the moment as to options

Monitored temps again today, and defo needs egr thermostat changing. After a 25-mile driving to work today, temp only got to 65 degC.

Hoping to pick one up at BMW at lunch and fit tonight.

Why don't you buy E39mad's E39 530i? Will leave you a few quid left over for the house and a nice car to boot.
