Reversing light

Postby gatty » Wed, 08 Jun 2011 12:16:11 UTC

Hi

I keep getting the 'reversing light Bulb Failure' on I drive. Guessing it might be the result of wiring loom through tailgate (e61 535d ). However it is intermittent and would have thought that the wires are either severed or not. Any Thoughts/checks would be appreciated.

I used to get a similar thing with my E39 touring, I changed the bulbs for oem and cleaned the terminals to cure it. Some aftermarket bulbs have a different resistance and can give errors. I sincerely hope it is something that simple for you.

Thanks for reply, i haven't changed the bulbs yet as on occassions (more often than not ) they are working. Can only assume they are original OEM as previous owner was a BMW stealer stalwart

May be worth just taking the bulbs out and cleaning the holders then, it'll cost you nothing and will at least eliminate one thing.

Not sure mate as I have only done this on an E39. I thought there was access for inside the tailgate behind a trap door but not sure.

Hi gatty,

You can get to the reversing and fog lights in the tailgate by opening the cover for the emergency triangle, carefully pulling out the foam covering the lamps, then loosening the screw holding the cluster in place. After disconnecting the harness. you should then be able to move it enough to get to the bulbs

For more detailed instructions and pictures, have a look at spaghetticoder's excellent online BMW TIS here:

Hope this helps.

However I should also add that I thought I had a simple problem like that when I started to get warnings for the left numberplate light. Unfortunately it was swiftly followed by the right one, And then the right foglight. And the right reversing light. It turns out this is not uncommon in E61s

I've just spent 3 hours rewiring the loom between the roof & the tailgate. Of the 9 wires in the loom, one was completely snapped & 4 others were damaged.

It wasn't actually that difficult, just time consuming...
