E39 Quicky - Brake Disc wear limits?

Postby TIMBERSNAKE » Thu, 28 Apr 2011 15:19:15 UTC

E39 525i SE Auto - 09/2000 facelift model M54 engine

Hi all,

Just a quick query, does anyone know what the BMW minimum recommended brake disc thickness limits are for my car (front and rear discs)? Also, is there a legal (MOT) limit? I have checked for both but can find no real figures?

Regards

J

Thanks, I also found these stats recently:

'E39 525i/528i Front Discs
New = 22mm
Minimum thickness = 20.4mm

E39 530i/540i Front Discs
New = 30mm
Minimum thickness = 28.4mm

E39 (except M5) Discs
New = 20mm
Minimum thickness = 18.4mm

In virtually all cases, bmw specifies 1.6mm of rotor wear'

Came from Bimmerforums, which is becoming an increasingly useful site since everyone in the UK started buying Audi's.....

BMW specified wear limits are the minimum allowable when NEW PADS are fitted. They are not the absolute min allowable wear limit. You can go below this limit as the pads and disc wear but the next time you will need new discs.

Thats right. My rear pads are so low they are nearly immeasurable! My rear discs are only 1mm under minimum limits, but as im fitting new pads im changing the discs too.
