Parking sensors not working.

E39 530d sport – The parking sensors don’t seem to be working. Is there a way of working out which one is faulty or is it trial and error?

Hi AB,

Small world! I had the same problem on mine! A quick search on here pointed me in the right direction... if you switch the ignition on [don't start the engine!] and put the car into reverse, then go round to each sensor and put your ear by it - if it's working you'll hear a clicking sound, if it's not you won't hear anything. I had one that wasn't working and bought a colour matched replacement from the Bay - much, much cheaper than the $tealers.

I had to take the bumper off to replace the duff sensor - but this wasn't as bad as it sounds. Lots of info on this site for all these little problems!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the tip. I've tried what you suggested but there is not clicking from any of them?

I have front and rear sensors... could it be something wrong with the control unit itself?

If none are making the clicking sound it certainly suggest that something else is wrong - sorry I don't have the knowledge of where else to look, well apart from the obvious - fuses etc.

Hope someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to help you...

Thanks lomondview... this is it... i've done a search but only the usual 'check for clicking' posts.

I should have added this in the title...

I assume that your reverse lights are coming on when you engage reverse?, i would think that the PDC system is made active by the reverse light switch, so this is the first check to carry out. Are you getting any kind of sound at all from the system? long beep etc..It would be worth looking at your fuses to check you don't have a blown fuse.. Failing that i believe the only other component in the system is the controller, this can be checked using a half decent code reader like carsoft or INPA.

I must admit I didn't think to check the reverse lights... I will do.

I have a button which turns them off... pressing this gives a long beep - according to the manual this is a confirmation of a malfunction but I guess the odd thing is non of the sensors are 'clicking'. Could the warning beep after pressing off/ on button also be due to a blown fuse?

I have sourced a local indy who can plug the car in over the weekend so if all else fails.... but was hoping to try all the DIY possibilities instead of paying someone else to fault find.

320d_uk. Am I right in thinking you're near me in west Sussex? If so you're welcome to come over and I'll read your fault codes on the laptop so you know what the problem is. Let me know.

Thanks to Dan I have a few codes from a diagnostic...

The descriptions are somewhat spurious so I’m hoping someone can help me decode these...?
