car shaking when cold

Postby A2SSM » Fri, 02 Oct 2009 16:03:22 UTC

Hi

I own a 530i sport registered on 12/2002

Since i have owned it (approx 3 months) i have noticed the car shaking in the mornings for 30 secs to about a min until the temp goes up a bit.

Recently it developed a misfire and the EML light came on. Misfire in cylinder 6. Since the plugs were replaced about 6 months ago i thought it was down to the coil pack. Moved coil 6 to 1. Reset light. After 2 weeks eml light on with misfire in 3 and 5

So i went out and bought 3 bremi coils and replaced them today. I thought that the shaking in the morning was down to them but it seems like it is not.

Note. Camshaft sensor, transmitter, and probe and maf sensor have been replaced.

I am a bit stuck if any one has any words of wisdom then it would be much apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A2SSM,

I too have had this problem and have changed the suspected offending coils, fitted new plugs. The misfire is less frequent these days but still hasn't been totally cured.

I posted a message "misfire from cold" where other members sugested HVAs, air temp sensors, etc. It only happens when cold, not when it has been started.

Have a search for my post and read through the suggestions; hopefully this will guide you to a solution.

Good luck!

That's due to faulty "gotta put a jumper on" sensor ?

Could anyone confirm whether that is the date of manufacture under the 11860t code?

There is huge threads on the net about this fault..

It does seem to happen to the 3 litre engine more than most, but most twin vanos engines can suffer..

One of the possible fixes is to replace the vanos seals with beisan systems modded ones..

Have a read up..there is a lot of info..

Oh... you havent fitted Bosch plugs have you ?

I have bought 6 bosch coils. However i was just about to replace them when i saw the dates? If these are the actual date of manufacture then know that the coils have only been on since april this year and so would be highly unlikely for it to fail with in 6 months.

I can therefore look for other causes of the misfire.

So could anyone confirm if those are the actual manufacturing dates that are on the leads? If someone has the 530i could please check to see if you have the bremi leads and if there are dates on them? Thanks

Much appreciated

A2SSM,

I have the M54 3.0 Litre; I'll look under the bonnet tomorrow and advise what coils I have; some are Bosch but two are recent replacement (can't remember who).

I am working from home tomorow so will reply during daylight hours! :D

I recently replaced the coil packs on my M54 engine and that is indeed the date of manufacture period.

Bremi are the OEM fitment as the ones I took out were branded BMW / Bremi and the ones I replaced with were also Bremi (without the BMW stamp), which I purchased from ECP.

The single vanos M54 engines can also suffer from this hesitation problem at cold idle. Mine improved after replacing the coil packs, switching to a higher viscocity oil (Castrol Edge 10W60 for M series engines) and adding a can of Wynn's hydraulic valve adjuster cleaner.

If that is the date that is on them then it seems that they have been replaced in april 2009 as well as the sparkplugs
Also the maf sensor, camshaft sensor, air temp sensor,
:?
What next, vanos seals? would those cause misfire?
o2 sensor sounds like a good idea (was within range though)
I heard there are two camshaft sensors on the bmw 530i (may have to replace the other one too)

I am left with 3 new bremi coils, europarts will not take them back (£39.04 inc vat each)
Anyone interested at £32 each including delivery can have them

check you've not got a faulty plug fella. otherwise you're on the right road. Or see a good indy who wont rip you off.

i too had the infamous accord type-r, still frequent the site to get my fix lol... (tonysATR)

i'm on my second BMW now. First one 330d sport 53 plate, great car and looked the business. The ride just was a little too harsh for my needs, so i now have a 530d sport. Did consider a 530i sport, but commuting costs would kill my income compared to the diesel.

Next in line, some time after spring, i'm going to be hovering about for an E39 M5... its always been on the wish list 8-)
It will be an expensive, unusual weekend car / long range cruiser, that will mostly live in the garage and die in its own depreciation. But it just has to be done. Such is its greatness, I have to own one and thats that

yes my brother has one at the mo. I actually bought some spax lowering springs because i wanted to buy a black facelift type r with red interior, lower it and change the exhausts then drive it for a few months

At the moment i have a 2002 bmw 530i m sport in black and also a 1997 bmw m3 3.2 evo convert
i had the 530d sport but it was a manual so it just did not suit the car. I also had the 3.0 m3 which was fantastic but i was curious as to how much difference the extra 30bhp would make in the evo.

The 5 series are awsome and the m3 power is superb.
The next car i am hoping to buy is a BLACK e46 m3 03/04 plate just waiting for prices to come down abit prob around christmas time :D
A BLACK e39 m5 is also on the list. Love BLACK cars

Right back to diagnostics and troubleshooting :?

just found out something that does not make sense to me.

the date above reads 03.04.09/10
I had a look at my mates coil and his read 03.07.08/10

So does it read day.month.year or year.month.day

surely it cannot be from 2008 to 2010 could it :?

A2SSM,

Sorry, I forgot to check under the bonnet what coils I have!

I have left my 10mm socket by the front door to remind me to look for you before I am forced to go Christmas shopping. :x-mas:

(Guess who's found the extra emoticons!)

I'll report what I have in the morning.
