Can you add a Subwoofer on E46 Head Unit?

Postby bmw2type-r » Wed, 05 Dec 2007 11:37:02 UTC

Hello folks,

I have the standard E46 BMW Business cassette player in my coupe, I am planning to take this out and retro fit a SAT NAV/TV into it.

Will the SAT NAV/TV monitor be able to put an after market sub woofer onto it via the 2 sub phone lead connection plugs?

cheers

There aren't any phono plugs (usually called RCA) on your original radio or the replacement monitor or any of the other bits needed to add the monitor.

You would have to buy an LOC of some sort and connect it to the speaker wires in order to have phono plugs.

Thanks for you help, I guess the quality of the sub isn't going to be the same then once they are interfering with the channels eh?:(

I have an Infinity Basslink which takes a high level input which is connected to my retrofit sat nav install. Just take the feed off the rear speakers, and power off the battery which is in the boot.

I have exactly the same set up as NickXX, and it's a perfect size. Not masses of bass, but just right and it's easy to connect to the rear speakers.

Makes a real difference.

Yeah - I've got a Sound on Top amp too. Makes a big difference for not a lot of effort/cash.

It won't really make too much difference with a subwoofers as those are low frequency notes and not as susceptible to signal loss etc as high frequency ones...well I suppose you will still have signal loss, but you just won't notice it with a subwoofer.

As mentioned above Infinity Basslink and other amplified subwoofers and stand alone amplifiers take speaker level inputs so that is another option if you haven't already bought an amp with RCA only inputs.
