Car wont turn over BMW 320D E92 (2009)

Postby alicheek » Sun, 03 Nov 2013 02:24:46 UTC

Hey there guys im new to this so sorry if I've posted in the wrong section or not done something right :P

Basically the issue just started yesterday, car has been working fine until just yesterday when it wont turn over, when attempting to do so I put my foot on the clutch and then press down the ignition button, I then get a preheat warning and just some buzzing sounds then nothing, car is showing other warnings for a punctured tyre (filled with gunk so must of made an air bubble so its reading as flat) and a light warning (break light needs to be replaced) but this new pre heat indicator keeps coming up. I've also noticed that the yellow engine block symbol never disappears when the ignition is on so im guessing that is trying to tell me something, looked it up on the manual but cant find anything about it there if it stays on when the ignition is on.

Now I am getting a new timing chain and crank shaft replacement for my car because mine is one of the troubled 177 engines (parts paid by BMW) the reason why this hasn't been done yet is because the dealership is waiting for the parts to come in (will take up to 3 weeks) so they said in the mean time I can drive it since it wouldn't break in that time (they seemed pretty adamant) now as I said before the day before this issue the car was running fine and the next day I just jumped in to take it for a car wash so it was ready for a date to find that my car wasn't turning over! (very lucky the timing of these issues!)

Car has done 115K miles, has had full BMW servicing and been doing M6 motorway driving all of its prior life.

So any enlightenment would be great !

Thanks for reading guys :)

Just an idea but whats the battery like? I had a low battery on my e90 and it started throwing all kinds of warning lights then the rear demister wouldnt work etc. Then it just wouldnt turn over at all. Its down to this (stupid imho) intelligent battery sensor which monitors battery life and then turns off non important functions (in its mind they are non important!!).
Might be worth putting it on a slow charge and see if it does anything???

I think its normal for that symbol to stay on until you start the engine, as long as it goes out as soon as you start the engine that is normal.

I think it's more a case of them being less important, I.e. is it more important that your heated window works til the batteries completely flat or it cuts out and gives you better chance of starting the car and getting somewhere you can sort it out? Tbh it's better to use the non essentials cutting out as an indicator that you have a battery/charging issue that it might be a good idea to sort before starting is prevented. Just my 10p worth tho lol.

Charged the car's battery to full with a slow charger and its the exact same thing, I notice in the engine there is a quick electrical shorting sound every time you give a big break from trying to turn over, but the second time you try it just makes a humming sound, everything else works, radio works heaters work windows work, the car just wont turn over at all.

Most likely cause is going to be the starter motor I'd imagine, can you upload a video of the sound?

I haven't heard one making that noise before. It's not the usual flat battery clicking noise and seeing as its doing something when pressing I'd guess that it's activating the starter, obviously it's not managing to turn the starter so I would suspect either a duff starter motor or problem on the power feed to the starter.

Yea I would probably agree also had very very wet weather recently so may be some how its shorted the starter motor, because I noticed the day before it just didn't start it failed to turn over once but second time it was fine, maybe that was a sign that its on its way out lol

I hope it's something as simple as a knackered starter motor and not the chain, especially as you have it booked in for a replacement!

Yea hope so though if its snapped when its been off should mean the damage is minimal compared to it happening when I am driving
