All windows opening on their own!

Postby richyBMW320D » Fri, 20 Apr 2012 06:49:34 UTC

Hi guys

I have a BMW 320D SE E46 Saloon on a 52 plate.

Looking for a little help if possible (or a local Auto Electrician!)

I have a BMW 320D (52 plate saloon) and about 3 days ago the fob stopped working so I couldnt open the car automatically. No problem I thought as I will get a battery on the weekend for it and in the meantime I will use my key to open the car. However this morning I went to open the car and the key just turned in the barrel and I thought I heard something fall down inside the drivers side door card and since then when I go to start the car all 4 windows open automatically. It also does this when I turn the engine off and get out. As soon as I shut the door all 4 windows open.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Cheers

Rich

Edit :- I have removed the fuse from the glove box fuse panel that controls the rear electric windows but the one for the front when removed sets off my alarm!

Just like when you hold the lock/unlock button down on the fob, and the windows open/close, it also does it when you hold the key in the lock/unlock position.

If the barrel is broken, bu its stuck in the 'unlock' (of the sensor thinks it is), it will open the windows in the way you mention.... Well, thats what I assume is happening.

Hi Neil

Well the fob hasnt been working for a few days. I have been opening the car using the key in the lock but that now just spins in the barrel and then the window problem occured! I was even sat in the works canteen yesterday and saw the windows actually drop down on their own! Its very wierd.

I have been told conflicting stories regarding my key fob as some say it has a battery and some say it doesnt...any help on that too would be great. The windows work ok when I am sat in the car with the ignition on and I can close them but then when I remove the key and get out, they open :(

There must be a sensor in there thats causing this. You'll need to look inside the door.

I think the oder ones have a removable battery, newer ones its built in and charged from ignition. If you can open the key then its replaceable, unlike mine which is 1 moulded part.

Being of an electronics bent, I go with the idea that the door switch is jammed in the unlock position triggering the auto-open.

Re the key, there are a few DIYs about (try e46fanatics.com) that show how to open up the sealed key and replace the rechargeable battery.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?
