Bahh my 2009 E90 failled MOT on Emissions HELP!

Postby C-J » Sun, 04 Mar 2012 16:15:34 UTC

MOT on a Saturday at a local MOT station

First Lambda reading 2.196 and the passble figure is 1.030 or below
Second Lambda reading 1.561!!

MOT tester tried 3 attempts...still failed!

I went straight to BMW main dealer and said please ASAP book in to fix this fault as I have just 5 days BMW waranty remaining.

Felt fobbed off as the service guy mentioned there is a trick to pass the test - something like rev to 2500ish rpm, foot off then it will pass on the second 2500ish rpm test as the car "shuts down" otherwise?!

Anyway, could I be being fobbed off as the 3rd year warranty is the dealers responsibility? Lambda sensor fault or sooted up I know is the usual cause of the above! Or an air leak

Any advice - there is nobody with the same problem as this! I have 2 options - retest fee and ask they do the "trick" or just book in BMW for MOT then watch the service mans face as he admits he was wrong and is the car at fault, not the MOT testers!

its meant to be this high, its a lean burn engine, another example of people not knowing what they are dealing with. the car isnt at fault the MOT tester is

Thank you very much

If others have searched and found this:

Then your MOT tester probably wasnt too up to it when it comes to which car they have, i.e not everyone knows my car is an E90! Let alone one of a few with an N43 lean burn engine that means my lambda reading can go upto 4.0!!

Passed now - poor MOT man very embarrased but very grateful for the experience.

On the first SPX "Ultima" Gas Analyser print out he put

Vehicle Description: 3 Series
318i 18 4E Engine Code

Which failled as the lambda max was 1.030 like most cars. My reading was way off the scale at 2.500

Having gone back there, being very apologetic I noticed this time he put my reg on the print out, which thankfully listed way more car info like Make: BMW AG, Model (E90, E91, E92, E93) 318i Saloon / Touring. Engine code: N43 B20 A

So in retrospec, yes he should have really put my reg, or vin in the SPX Ultima Gas Analyser rather than just choosing any random 318i he could find!

Any idea how to take it further?
My car failed MOT today E91 318i (2008 N43 engine) as their limits for lambda were wrong.
According to "In-service exhaust emission standards for road vehicles: 17th edition" issued by VOSA the limits are between 0.7 to 4.0.
I showed them the document but they said they couldn't do anything as the system says "no".
It is a lot of hassle because that, really annoying.

Hi I have just checked using the vin decoder and we have the n43 engine, so does this mean that they have tested as the wrong vehicle?

You have exactly the same situation as I have.
I'll call VOSA tomorrow and ask how to get this sorted.
I'll let you know tomorrow.

If you call Vosa and report it the correct way he will get a spanking for being stupid and you get the failure removed from the system.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as it would appear to be.
If the MOT centre can't enter the vehicle details correctly you'll have to use Appeal Form VT17 - and there is fee that comes with it (usually the price of MOT test).
I called the MOT centre I had the test done and they said that the testing machine doesn't have this option.
I don't know what to do as the appeal will cost me additional money and it takes up to 2 weeks to be sorted.
Shall I find different MOT centre and ask if they know how to test it properly?

Hi i printed of the info from the vosa document and showed the garage today and they agreed they were in the wrong they said they entered the wrong vehicle details they should have tested as the lean burn engine the n43. We now have an mot and have got 20 quid back for the engine treatment that we put in the fuel tank and the petrol we wasted running around trying to get the emissions down.
Thanks everyone again i can always rely on the forum members for help

Just to quickly update you guys what happened.
Yes, the embarrassment occurred when I showed them how to do it properly this morning The technician was very kind, was listening and following my guide.
He said he had never seen that Lambda limits before... well there is always the first time for everything.
I also taught him how to find the engine code badge on BMW cars, so now he is aware where to look and what document he should be holding while testing BMW.
The "manager" I was dealing, on the other hand, was a prick and very unhelpful.
Saying "I've worked 20 years in this industry and never seen these kind of limits in my life" proves that he doesn't know much, does he?
It's not fair for me to say that, but he didn't even wanted to listen what I was trying to explain.
Anyway it's all sorted now.
Thanks to this forum I was able to quickly identify the actual problem.
Thank you guys.

Glad to hear you got it sorted in the end. I wouldnt use those clowns for an MOT again though, especially with the attitude of the manager.

Cheers
