Anti-roll bar drop links

Postby smorris_12 » Wed, 02 Mar 2011 20:17:04 UTC

Evening all,

Replacing the drop links on the front of my E46 is on the cards so looking for recommendations. EuroCarParts do Lemforder ones a smidge cheaper than our friends at Cotswold but also a no-name (at least, the name's not named) brand for £16 a side. Ebay turns up yet more non-named ones for about £16 a pair.

Anyone ever tried these cheaper ones? There's not a lot to drop links so a cheap make could well be fine but if they're going to make the joints on them from cheese I won't bother.

Opinions, abuse and suggestions of parts places to the usual address.
Scott

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

I recently purchased a pair for £12 (including discount) from my local parts place I think they were £15 or £16 before discount, if they turn out to be chocolate as I expect then even if they last half as long as a better make then at that price I won't be bothered as I changed myself in about 20 mins... Ony changed them a month ago so not much help on how long they last. Nothing ventured nothing gained...

Hi

I put some no name ones on about 2 years ago and they lasted about 2 years before they started creaking terribly when turning the steering - took some tracking down but when I removed them it was clearly the problem.

Replaced them with some more no namers as they're so cheap and easy to do.

Tony

Cheers guys. That's kinda the thinking I was following. Not a tricky job and it's a part where OE ones wear anyway. I just wish the SatanPit (or EuroCarParts website) was a bit more informative as to makes that aren't Bosch & Lemforder.

I might give allgermanspares and Mill Auto a bell in the morning as they should both do Meyle kit (bought some Meyle lollipop bushes and they seemed nicely made) which might be a nice comprimise on price and quality. Failing that, maybe I'll try ECP's cheap ones in the vain hope they're Bilstein. Should try phoning them I suppose.

It's irritating - now I've found the cause of the clonk I want to be out there as soon as possible changing them, even if it meant doing it by candlelight!! No time for this careful reflection on stuff!!!

Cheap and cheerful for these mate. It's really not worth spending on branded ones as there are gradings that suspension parts have to meet. I'm not going to say they're as good as named ones but there's not enough difference in them to warrant paying more than lowest level.
As a guide they usually last about 2-3 years instead of 2-4 years for the better ones.
At that money - and considering how easy they are to fit - you're far better off changing them more regularly.

Cheers for the reassurance, chap. First phone call netted me Delphi ones at £9 a side which made me happy. I know the name and was happy until I foolishly looked them up on Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi_Corporation ) They seem to be falling into the mire and, for their sins, own Lucas.

What am I buying into?!?!!! ;-)

Totally agree, the drop links are dead easy to replace so I didn't bother too much about the brand when I did mine.

Hi,
I need to change one of these as I had an mot advisory and there seems to be a gentle clonk going over some bumps coming from the same corner. Is it something I can do with trolley jack and axle stands on my drive or is a ramp needed?

Thanks, James.

Axles stands and jack are fine, its a very easy job, if you do a search on here you will find a step by step someone did that will keep you right.

Cheers
