Remap vs. Tuning Box.... thoughts....

Postby 330d_dan » Mon, 12 Nov 2007 09:49:05 UTC

Just after some opinions and thoughts on which offers the best results, a tuning box or a remap.

My 330d has a TuniT box fitted (was on when I got it, so I don't really know what a std 330d is like) and I am very pleased with it (apart from it being quite thirsty) but I was wondering was it worth getting it remapped and removing the box...??

Does a remap offer a more efficient increase than a box?

Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on this.

Generally you should see a fuel consumption improvement and performance improvement with a re-map and even a decent tuning box.
Conventional wisdom is that re-map a better more complete solution, but I've been hearing really good things about Spider tuning boxes lately. All tuning boxes are not the same!

Quite right agh!, not all tuning boxes are the same BUT on the whole a remap offers a better solution. Concerns regarding tuning boxes tend to stem from overfueling and overboosting. It's your choice, but I would always favour a remap!

just been on the spider website, sounds quite good, also the benefit of a tuning box is is you can remove it from the car,if you sell it or for insurance reasons, for the 320d it takes it up to 195bhp,not bad.

Tuning boxes Raid HP???

Postby 320td » Mon, 12 Nov 2007 23:49:10 UTC

Hi all,

I'll be getting delivery of my 520d M sport next Friday and thinking of chipping it, its the 177bhp engine, any ideas? I went on Ebay and this bloke was selling a Raid HP chip for £385 but I'm not sure I should spend this much on a little black box.

any help will be appreciated, I would pref something I can take out the car when it goes in for services etc...

Last I heard the new ECU with these 177bhp engines presented a new challenge to re-mappers which they have not cracked.... yet. Not sure if it was encryption of something else, there is a thread here somewhere with details.

Thanks mate. I will look around for it. Shame cos I'm sure the 177 can be pushed to around 220.

spider have the box for the 177bhp engine, which takes it up to 210bhp.

after agh mentioned the spider box,im thinking hard about getting one, simply because of insurance reasons,as i can just take it off, remaps are better i know but they still offer a similar gain to the box's,and by all accounts the spider is a bit more advanced than the other box's,and again they are interchangable, and 195bhp is enough for me,and i said i would'nt play around with the engine on this car.

Tempting isn't it. [;)] though if I did fit one I'd tell the insurance company. The fuel consumption improvement gIzze reported (he has on on his 163bhp 120d) was quite considerable and better than anyone has reported with any re-map. 195bhp is plenty, especially if the torque spread well through the rev range. Peak power isn't everything!

I'm confused, is the Spider box the same as the RaidHP? I was offered the RaidHP for around £385 which seems alot. The only thing is my 520d (177) will come with a DPF. I had loads of issues with the DPF getting blocked up every 200 miles with the chip in my Audi and the only way to make it regenerate itself was to take the chip out and blast it on the motorway. I think I learnt the hard way as the first time it happened I just took it out on the motorway and the whole car went into limp home mode, which was not fun.....Audi had to take the car in for a forced regenertaion.

P.s Who and where can I get a Spider box from please?

cheers

Thanks mate, dont worry about having a weblink on your reply as I just cut and paste the address and works fine. Gave T Unit Bham a call who will get back to me soon. Good thing about the TUnit is that it can be re prog for a different car.

The TUNIT cost £480quid supplied and an extra £50 for the fitting.

Do the sums, how many miles do you have to drive before the improved fuel economy covers the cost of the tuning box ?

and i said i would leave this one standard.

i dont think ill ever recoupe the cost back in fuel, but i should get something back if i take it off before i sell it,one of the benefits i guess.

black grille,19" alpinas, sprint booster, now this,i need hipnosis to ignore these costly threads-I WILL NOT READ THAT THREAD,RESIST,RESIST,I CAN DO IT.

been on an assertiveness course today and tomorrow so that might help, although im not so sure, cant decide  .
