BMW 6 Series Overview

Postby Matt » Sun, 18 Jan 2009 19:50:29 UTC

BMW 6 Series:
E24 1976-1989
E63 2004 - Coupe
E64 2004 - Convertible

BMW E24 History:
1976: Production begins for two models - the 630CS and the 630CSi
1977: launched to US market
1978: 635CSi launched and 630CSi was replaced by the 633CSi
1979: 630CS replaced with 628CSi
1982: May onwards - Facelift and improvements to interior in addtion to a new engine for the 635CSi
1983: new ZF 4-speed auto 'box became available from January 1983, with "EH" switchable function as an extra option
1984: M635CSi launched
1987: Last production run and In Germany and Sweden, the cat-fitted 635 was rated at 211bhp. The UK-spec RHD version was rated at 220bhp.

All the UK-spec (and European) ones were marketed as "M635CSi", and enjoyed 286bhp. At least, they did in theory. From 1988 onwards in the UK, the M635CSi was upgraded to "Highline" specification (i.e. lots of leather, ellipsoid headlights, more bells and whistles), and apart from badging became indistinguishable from the standard 635CSi "Highline".

Although they still had 286bhp on paper, some owners of the post-'88 "M635CSi" have been discovering that their tuning was well short of that figure (240-ish being common). An ECU remap / rechip can rectify this.
