EML light on compact. HELP!

Postby lordy123uk » Fri, 23 Dec 2011 09:09:53 UTC

Morning all;

I've got a problem with the Mrs Beemer, 2004 316ti compact (1.8l motor).

the problem is with the EML light coming on the dash which reduces power/ limp mode.

the problem is intermittant, wont happen sometimes for a few weeks, never does it from cold but always seems to happen when you go out for a drive, park up for a period of time, start car and EML light appears.

put the car on a snap-on scanner and the following codes appear.

2A67 - VVT ACTIVATION
2A6B - POWER SUPPLY LIMIT VVT EMERGENCY

The genuis in me suggests its related to the Variable Valve Timing, i've searched round the net and here so many different conflicting stories, some of horror and some which is an easy fix.

Are there any BMW techs on that can help, i'm pretty handy with a set of spanners and can do most things myself. I really dont want to go to the main stealers but i fear i may have to if nobody can help

Cheers
Matt

Most common cause is the VVT motor it sits between cyl 2 & 3 on top of the rocker cover.
Check the resistance of it can't remember the figure exactly but approx 1-2 Ohms for the two contacts

but then check between each terminal and the motor casing it should be open circuit, this is the most common failure a short circuit in the motor.

How it works

thanks! much appreciated - so worse case, if it is the motor, is it a diy job or will it have to go to bmw or a specialist? any special tools required?

Pretty straightforward, remove the rocker cover and it unbolts with two 10mm nuts,
with the cover off you can reconnect the plug and switch on the ignition and see it move on it's self test

Thanks guys!

how common is it for these motors that control the eccentric to pack up? my problem is intermittant could it be this or is there a sensor that activates the motor?

i assume this motor is continually moving when the engine is running/ being driven through the rev range?
